BOTTOM 5: Feb. 8, 2008

The Bottom 5 dumbest things in politics and the news from the last week, as told by Fort Hays State University political science professor Chapman Rackaway.
5. Super Dropout
Mitt
Romney, bland champion of the status quo, got it handed to him on Super
Tuesday and dropped out. Romney is one of those plastic types
who had their personality removed to run for office. Better he’s
gone now than actually winning and trying to learn charisma before the
general election.
4. The Hill Street Massacre
Hillary Clinton got slaughtered at the Kansas Caucuses on Tuesday. More than 70 percent of voters caucusing went for Obama. The killer is
that Clinton won bigger states and has more superdelegates on her side.
Remember when Democrats went nutty about losing the electoral vote in
2000 after the popular vote went their way? What will the Obamamaniacs
do if he wins the primaries but loses the convention?
3. It’s the ant problem,
stupid
The Kansas Legislature wants to make consumers pay a five-cent
deposit on every can or bottle they buy, redeemable if they bring them
back to the retailer. It would encourage recycling, but at a massive
cost. I personally lived in a town that had such a rule, and it
made for stinky redemption centers, massive storage problems, and ants
everywhere. We have curbside recycling. People should use
it. This bill, though, is a terrible idea.
2. Coal plant scuffles
The state Legislature is fighting over whether a coal-fired power plant
should be allowed to be built near Holcomb. Let me get this straight: We need energy, but we can’t build coal plants and nobody is going
to let wind farms be built anywhere near them. Are we going to
use hamsters on wheels to power the state next?
1. Chelsea Lately
Hillary
Clinton’s campaign is mad because an MSNBC anchor was critical of
her using daughter Chelsea to convince Democratic superdelegates to
support the senator for the nomination. Chelsea’s working the
phones, Bill’s giving speeches. Seems like every other member
of the Clinton family is more popular than Hillary. Is Socks the
Cat still available to campaign?
