ALBUM REVIEW: Gavin DeGraw-Gavin DeGraw

Gavin DeGraw is a musical genius. He's like those new multi-razor razors. Sharp enough to get rid of that unwanted facial hair, but smooth enough to leave the skin unnicked.
Yeah, he's that good.
That said, Gavin DeGraw, DeGraw's new album gets away with a lot. Meaning he seems to rip himself off, often and good. First single, album opener and all-around kickass song, "In Love With a Girl" sounds faintly familiar. Like a revved up "I Don't Wanna Be." But still when DeGraw launches into that soulful wail he has the track scoops us up in the palm of his hand.
That's his strength anyway. He's not a bastion of originality. Instead he's solidly talented. He knows when, where and how to work his charms. It may get old if you are looking for something new or groundbreaking.
But on the flipside, he's like that old friend that reminds you of the good times. The one who always tells the best stories. The one who gets you drunk and into a little bit of non-felony trouble to make you feel like you're fifteen again.
Yeah, he's that guy.
Play "Cop Stop" at a party. Everyone will be laughing and joking around. Maybe by the end of it they'll all be singing along. But they won't be pissing and moaning about the music selection.
And songs like "Medicate the Kids" and "She Holds a Key" are the kind of music that wash over your body in times of heat and passion. You know what I mean. They're sexy and compelling.
It's easy listening without being Kenny G. That's what it is.
