MOVIE REVIEW: Made of Honor

By: Will Manly

5/4/2008

We'll start with the problems in this movie, because there are some and they cannot be ignored.

Some of us are annoyed by a hero who romantically, fearlessly jumps on a horse — for the first time in his life — and takes off at a high gallop to save the day. A cityboy from New York isn't likely to have Ben Johnson's instincts. (For those of you who Wikipedia Ben Johnson, I refer to the actor, not the sprinter.)

This one, however, is a small point, at least compared to some others.
For one, it is sufficiently uncomfortable to watch so male a creature as Tom (Patrick Dempsey) serve as maid of honor. The way he enlisted the help of his friends — whose masculinity was a bit forced, what with the daily macho basketball games and poker nights — to wrap girly bridal shower gift baskets.

"We have to make you the best maid of honor ever," one friend tells Tom, AFTER about 30 minutes of the movie had revolved around making Tom the best maid of honor ever.
On the other hand, this movie had some triumphs.

Made of Honor is good for an occasional, genuine laugh. The sight of Grandma Pearl wearing a necklace made of glow-in-the-dark Thunder Beads was a nice touch.
And the ladies seem to like this kind of thing.

Besides, Patrick Dempsey is soooo dreamy.
